K1 Scouting was founded in 2025 with a simple mission: to bring sharper, more honest scouting coverage to the hockey world. Built from the ground up by Sam Henes, K1 started as a personal project rooted in a deep passion for the game and a belief that there’s always value in doing the work, watching the tape, asking better questions, and taking prospects seriously.

Without a traditional playing or front office background, K1 leans into curiosity, detail, and the value of fresh eyes. What began with one scout and access to InStat has grown into a small but committed team of contributors, including experienced advisors from inside the game.

Sam Henes
Founder & Director of Scouting
Sam Henes launched K1 Scouting in 2025 with the goal of creating sharper, more grounded scouting content built on curiosity, detail, and a deep love for the game. A graduate of Georgetown University, Sam’s background combines writing, research, and independent player evaluation. He oversees all scouting content, operations, and strategy for K1.
